Help us to keep our sails turning for generations to come

For over 200 years, Bursledon Windmill's sails have turned over the village of Bursledon. It is now the only working windmill in Hampshire and provides a fascinating glimpse into the county's milling history.

You may have noticed that the windmill is currently without its stocks and sails: we took the very difficult decision to remove them due to the wear and tear that comes with being a working windmill. We are currently fundraising to help repair/replace the stocks and sails and get the windmill back into full working order.

So far, our Keep Our Sails Turning campaign has had incredible support from our local community and we have already raised £8,760, a fantastic achievement in the face of the many challenges of the past two years and the current turbulent times.

We’ve had support from local groups such as Bursledon Short Mat Bowls club; we’ve had a sponsored 5k run and two tandem sky dives; we’ve had baked goods donated by a local baker to sell and walking tours provided free of charge, with all profits going to the campaign; we’ve received grants from trusts and foundations and a local sail maker has donated brand new sail cloth for when the sails are reinstated. On top of this, we ran a photography competition asking the local community to submit their photos for a chance to feature in the Bursledon Windmill Calendar 2022, with all profits from its sale going directly to our Keep Our Sails Turning campaign. A local graphic designer, video production and animation company and magazine offered their time for free to judge and select the winning photographs that went into the calendar. This incredible, ongoing support from our local community really proves just how special Bursledon Windmill is to everyone. A very big thank you to everyone who has donated to and supported our campaign so far!

We know that you’re eager to see the windmill back in full working order: it is taking longer than we anticipated to get the stocks and sails back up and running. Rest assured that we are working hard with our partners to get it back in working order, but as Bursledon Windmill is Grade II listed, we want to ensure that everything is done correctly which takes time (and money!). Please keep an eye on this page for future updates on how we are getting on with the project.

We still need your support to help us get the sails back on the windmill and ensure our community treasure will be protected and restored for generations to come. Any donations we receive will directly support the repair/replacement of the stocks and sails and getting Bursledon Windmill up and working again. Thank you.
